The US is working on a bridge over the Pacific to enable a plane in flight to cross the Atlantic.
The project, called the Bluefin-21, is part of a larger effort to build an air bridge across the Atlantic to allow ships to transport cargo to the US.
“It’s a bit of an ambitious thing, but it’s an achievable goal,” said the bridge’s project manager, Mark Fagan, speaking at a recent briefing.
The US currently has about 30 commercial vessels on its coast, many of which have been anchored in international waters since the late 1800s.
Fagan said the new bridge will help reduce the number of ships in international waterways by at least 20 percent.
The bridge will also be a new option for a future military campaign.
“The Bluefin is an incredible piece of technology,” Fagan told Al Jazeera.
“When it’s designed properly, it will do the job.”
In February, the US announced it would spend $1.5bn on a new bridge to cross Lake Erie in Michigan, and Fagan believes the bridge is a better bet for future maritime security.
“We’re in a new era, but in a good way,” he said.
The Bluefin will be powered by two diesel engines, with the first powered by an electric motor.
The first phase of the project will take six years, but Fagan says he expects to have the first bridge completed by 2019.
Faking a crash Faking crashes is a process in which a vehicle crashes and is blamed on human error.
Fearing that it would cause a false-flag attack, Fagan and his team faked the crash of a Boeing 777.
They used a laptop computer to capture the cockpit voice recorder and take screenshots of the flight data recorders.
In a statement, the Federal Aviation Administration said the laptop used by the fake pilots was able to capture data on a flight from the Boeing 777 to a nearby runway, but the laptop had no way of confirming that the plane was indeed a civilian airliner.
Fading planes Faking planes is a term used to describe a hoax that involves the manufacture or release of fake aircraft in order to cause a media frenzy.
Firing a fake plane is an extremely rare occurrence.
“If a real plane goes down, it’s usually because the pilot didn’t make the landing, so we can’t make an example of it,” Fager told Al-Jazeera.
Fagans work for a firm called Fagan Engineering.
The company, which specialises in engineering and construction projects, specializes in building bridges, roads, railways and other infrastructure projects.
“Most of our clients are in the private sector,” Fagancen said.
“Our job is to build infrastructure for our clients.”
Fagan’s firm also builds bridges for airlines and other industries.
“What we do is we make bridges that are not only functional but actually look good,” he told Al Jazeera.
“And we do this in a very professional manner.”
Fagagan said he believes the Bluefish bridge project is part a larger initiative to help build the bridge over Lake Erie, as well as other international waterway infrastructure projects in the US and abroad.
The Pentagon has been funding a study of the Bluewater Bridge project since 2007.
In April, the study was released by the US Department of Defense.
The study found the bridge would be a boon for the US military.
“In terms of capability, the Blue Fin will be a key piece of the US Army’s infrastructure,” the study said.
It added: “This bridge will be of enormous value to the United States Navy and Marine Corps and to the nation as a whole.”
But Fagan stressed that there are significant issues that still need to be addressed, such as the cost of the bridge, the amount of time it will take to complete the project, and whether it will allow for the construction of a new runway at the site.
